Harvard, Cambridge celebrate Blackstone, Switch House projects
Harvard Gazette - 21 Jun 2007
... CAMBRIDGE, MA - Harvard and City of Cambridge officials on Tuesday (June
19) used the penultimate day of spring to celebrate a double dose of sunny
news.
One item: Thirty-three new affordable housing units renovated from a onetime utility switch house on Blackstone Street, near the Western Avenue Bridge across the Charles River.
And the second item, right across the street: 46 Blackstone South. Just a few years ago it was an underused urban eyesore - a 19th-century cluster of buildings bounded by Blackstone Street, Western Avenue, and Memorial Drive. Now Blackstone South, a consolidation of three buildings into one, is a Harvard-owned office winning awards for environmental design.
The Blackstone renovation, completed last year, has received the highest ("platinum") rating by the U.S. Green Building Council ...

loading docks of the Culinary Institute of America: sprigs of asparagus in
the spring, peas and beets in the summer, apples and squash in the fall.
The food _ much of it taken from the dirt the day before _ provides fresh fodder from the Hudson Valley for the riverside school's five restaurants and classroom kitchens. Just as importantly, it drums up business for the farmers.
The culinary institute, which buys directly from about two dozen local farms, is among the many colleges providing healthier choices for their students while throwing a lifeline to farmers getting by on thin margins... Farm To College

Residential colleges
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
A residential college system is a housing and educational aspect of certain
universities across the world, most notably Oxford University and Cambridge
University in the United Kingdom; Yale University, Rice University, and
the California Institute of Technology in the United States. Other universities
in the U.S. have recently begun implementing residential colleges as a housing
option, but at these universities 100% of undergraduate students are members
of a residential college. Princeton University has a residential college
system for underclassmen, but most upperclassmen leave their college to
join an Eating Club. It has recently begun implementing a 4-year residential
system more like that of Yale, but for only a portion of its undergraduates.

...USA - Expanding college rolls mean big demand for private apartment complexes
to house students. Here's a study guide to cashing in.
The obvious ways to capitalize on the baby boom now revolve around things like pharmaceutical stocks and retirement communities. A less obvious play has to do with the children of the boomers now crowding college campuses: buy apartment buildings in college towns.
The college population from ages 18 to 24 is now 9.5 million, up 20% from a decade ago and possibly destined to peak only in 2010, according to the National Center for Public Policy & Higher Education. Dorms and fraternities take care of many , but 70% live off campus. Once distained by investors loath to be landlords for latter-day Animal Houses, student apartments now are finding their way into the portfolios of wealty investors, private equity forms and real estate investment trusts...

AS
I SEE IT: Neighborhood life in Indiana
Written by Kenneth E. Gabler, Indiana Borough Manager
Gazette - 3 Aug 2008
... INDIANA, PA - This is in reference to the Gazette's report on Indiana
Borough's Community Development Committee meeting published July 22.
While the article focused on the consequences of the "400-foot rule" for residential neighborhoods, the common issue for all residents is the effect student rentals have on the quality of life for families living nearby. Participants were unanimous in their complaint about the negative impacts created by students in traditional neighborhoods. The conflict in lifestyle between students and families is the real issue that must be addressed.
Actually, the 400-foot rule is not even relevant to this discussion. Last year, the borough adopted the Neighborhood Preservation Ordinance, which prevents the spread of additional student housing in R-1 and R-2 districts by essentially allowing only functional families as permitted uses in these areas. This law may stop the bleeding, but in many neighborhoods, the damage has already been done.
One approach to resolving this problem may be to simply sacrifice any neighborhood with a large number of student rentals. In a sense, the borough has already made this commitment in areas immediately adjacent to the university through its "overlay zone," which allows high-density, student housing. Hopefully, market forces and incentive programs will eventually lead to large-scale redevelopment of blighted properties in the overlay zone. This student enclave would be oriented toward pedestrian amenities and focused on student lifestyles and student needs. More importantly, the overlay zone is separated from family neighborhoods, helping minimize conflicts.
Ideally, the Neighborhood Preservation Ordinance and the overlay zone will work in tandem to draw students out of traditional family neighborhoods, at least to a tipping point where family values become the dominant character of a neighborhood, rather than student lifestyles. In some cases, the conversion of one or two student rentals back to family housing may completely alter the "balance of power" in a neighborhood.
Therefore, the third leg of the borough's strategy for reclaiming our neighborhoods has been to develop incentive programs to convert student rentals back to family housing. The Elm Street Program is one avenue to encourage the revitalization of our neighborhoods, and the borough continues to work on additional programs that will make it financially attractive to buy student rentals and return them to family housing ...

PR-Canada - 2 Aug 2008

the Ohio-Indiana border drew cars from 17 states and Canada and increased
attendance by 54% over last year’s turnout of 254 cars. The uptown streets
were closed off all day and entertained thousands of onlookers enjoying the
expensive German sports cars.
“It’s a remarkable turnout,” said P2O Publicity Director Chris Rieman. “We set a new benchmark last year and had concerns that $4.00 gas and a sluggish economy would stand in our way like it has many other automotive events this year. To see an increase of nearly 140 cars is most satisfying and tells us P2O is a summer event attendees can’t miss.” ...

Rebuilding campus
Minnesota Daily - 2 Aug 208
... MINNEAPOLIS, MN - The Minneapolis City Council’s approval on Friday
[July 25] of Doran Development’s plans to renovate the Dinkydome represents
another move by private developers to cash in on the student housing market.
Our reaction is that the plan, like others, is not in the best interest of
students or independent businesses around campus.
Doran’s founder, Kelly Doran, told the Star Tribune in December that rental rates in the renovated complex would range from $700 to $850 per bed. Pricey rates like that only add to the nightmares of the housing hunt for students, many of whom are already crunched by rising tuition, book costs, gas prices and a generally rickety economy. Expensive housing on campus forces low-income student off campus, where cheap houses and apartments – already hard to come by – are oftentimes managed by incompetent landlords who neglect upkeep, compliance and the law in managing their properties ...

will house 250 students in four-person suites starting this fall semester,

Square's New Businesses Annoy Neighbors
Morning Edition - 24 Oct 2007
... CAMBRIDGE. MA - Harvard Square is no longer a scruffy neighborhood of
quirky, independent businesses. Locals are grumbling about chain stores ruining
the area. Harvard University, which owns a lot of the real estate on the Square,
is sensitive to the criticism and says it's not really justified.
Communities of
Opportunity: Smart Growth Strategies for Colleges and Universities
In July 2007, NACUBO and Ayers Saint Gross released a publication entitled
Communities of Opportunity: Smart Growth Strategies for Colleges and Universities.
Institutions of higher education across the United States have adopted smart
growth strategies to help ensure that new growth and development meet the
institutions’ mission to provide high-quality education, support research
and innovation, and serve the community in which they live.
The publication, co-authored with the Environmental Protection Agency, begins with an overview of smart growth strategies and then makes a four-part argument for adopting such strategies:

8 Great Places You've Never Heard Of
Mother Earth News - Aug/Sep 2007
Our second annual list of sustainable communities with a vision for the future.
What makes a town great to live in or visit? Each of the eight places we’ve chosen to highlight this year are unique, yet they share many of the same qualities. We’re not suggesting you quit your job and make a beeline for one of these towns — maybe just learn from them to make your own community more livable and sustainable. “The 20th Century was about going, but the 21st Century will be about staying in a place worth staying in,” says James Kunstler, author of The Geography of Nowhere, a critique of the current state of suburban living ...

10 Most Popular Retirement Community Towns Announced at Topretirements.com
15 Aug 2007
OXFORD, OH - The votes are in, and the most popular retirement communities
have been chosen. Some of the winners are a bit surprising too – towns
on the top 10 list range from Florida to Nova Scotia, and Connecticut to Arizona.
John Brady, President of www.Topretirements.com, announced the winning towns today. “This was an unannounced, online popularity contest among site visitors to “Topretirements – Find Your Perfect Retirement Community”. Every time a visitor viewed a town’s review page; that counted as a vote. Those with the most online visits were assumed to be the towns that active adults are most interested in learning about.” Visits were tallied between January 1 and August 1, 2007 ...
Perhaps the most surprising choices included the small college town of Oxford, Ohio; the historic coastal town of Old Saybrook, CT; and the northernmost choice, charming Halifax, Nova Scotia. ...

College Towns Call Us Back
GreenGeezer - 6 Jun 2007
... USA - For at least two years we have been talking to our friends about
how we'd like to maybe move back to Bloomington, Indiana, where we went to
college. Many of them just don't get it, so we were glad to see that there's
a website -- College Town Life -- that's dedicated to celebrating life in
these great towns. What's more, Kiplinger's May 2007 issue features an article
on why college towns are perfect for boomers about to retire, or in "pre-retirement"
-- like us geezers ...

Robert Karrow's College Town Life website continues to grow in scope and
sophistication, continuing to easily be the very best website about all
things "college town." If it's not on your bookmarks, it should

page, and also lists a number of Great Examples of Specially Created Neighborhoods.
Among those neighborhoods are: The Cotton District in Starkville, MS; Doe
Mill Neighborhood (New Urbanist) in Chico, CA; and Trinity Heights Faculty
and Staff Housing in Durham, NC. If these kinds of things interest you,
you should subscribe to the weekly College
